Stealth is a niche genre in gaming. Most of the time, “stealth” is just one out of several ways by which you can complete the level, with you picking the path less traveled. However, there are games that put stealth at the forefront, with the developers focusing all of their efforts on the mechanics. In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase the 6 best stealth games to play on PC in 2022.
Table of Contents
1. Hitman 3
The Hitman trilogy is one of the best immersive sims you'll ever have the pleasure of playing. It puts players into the shoes of Agent 47 on a journey all over the globe, where you assassinate targets in ways you can't imagine. Hitman 3 contains both the maps of the first two games - it is fun, addictive, and has a huge replay value.
The best part of Hitman 3 is the available ways that you can kill your targets. If you never played a Hitman game, the gist is, that you are placed on a level, sometimes even at your own choice of location if you finished the mission before, and you are tasked to kill several targets and sometimes do some other stuff as well. How you do it, is up to you. The disguise system is Hitman's bread and butter, its core gameplay mechanic. As agent 47 the perfect human, you can take on several disguises in all the levels to allow you to take out your targets in easier or more interesting ways.
2. Alien Isolation
Alien isolation is visually very beautiful and detailed, it has an excellent atmosphere, and a fantastic sound design, intensifying the moments of dread and suspense. In the plot, you find yourself in the role of engineer Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, the protagonist in the classic 1979 film “Alien”, missing since the incident of the Nostromo spaceship.
The story starts out when Amanda seizes an opportunity that could result in important clues to discovering her mother's whereabouts. However, she instead finds herself trapped in the enormous space station Sevastopol, with a killer Alien roaming around the area. With survival as the main objective, You will have few resources at your disposal, relying on distraction, stealth, and strategy. And while you can find weapons that could help you deal with the enemies you may find, caution is advised, as combat noises will attract a much more dangerous foe, and your weapons will be useless against it.
3. Dishonored 2
Dishonored 2 is a complex game with a simplistic first-person action wrapper. It offers up a variety of different gameplay options to run through the game with, while presenting a bigger world for you to stretch those options out in. It’s a great follow-up to the first game and certainly improves on its ideals.
By throwing you into its gloriously open missions with a bag full of tricks, running wild in Dishonored 2's fascinating world of stealth playgrounds never fails to be both fun and challenging. While anyone who doesn't have the patience for its particular brand of methodical exploration will likely find the experience tedious, if you can commit to trying to ghost your way through its lengthy campaign, even disappointing shortcomings – especially in terms of its story – likely won't stop you from having a whale of a time.
4. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Let me start off by saying this game is unfinished, a large chunk of the game is missing that contains the originally planned ending and the entire second half of the game is filled with the same exact missions from the first half but with increased difficulty. That's a lot to take at once, now you might ask yourself, what makes it worth buying?
Well, even in this state, the game is a lot of fun to play, having probably THE BEST stealth open-world gameplay ever made, you can approach missions in any way you want, either stealth or guns blazing, either call a helicopter for support or snipe from afar, either send your companion in or go in a vehicle or tank, anything is possible in terms of gameplay.
5. Mark of the Ninja
A fantastic action stealth game, offering multiple ways of playing in well-designed levels. Challenging at times without being frustrating, largely due to the excellent controls. This is the perfect stealth game for people who like 2D games, personally, I think having a 2D environment makes it easier for the devs to put together different movement sets, maps, and game mechanics in general.
There are plenty of different skills and styles to specialize in. I prefer the stealthy way, but even then you can choose to kill every enemy or act entirely unnoticed, or you can go full beat 'em up style.
6. Invisible, Inc.
Invisible, Inc. is one of my all-time favorite games. Its pixel graphics might not look like much, but it's a very complex game that has immense replay value as a roguelike tactical stealth game.
The game punishes you for making mistakes in a way that is very consistent with the genre. If you're sloppy, get spotted too often, or let the site raise alarms, you will risk getting caught, getting shot or having to abort the mission objectives. It can quickly turn into a scramble for your agents' lives. But if you're smooth, you do things by the book, you're careful, you will go through the enemy complex like a handful of ninjas.
