1 - Dragon Age Origins
Dragon Age Origins is amongst the best RPGs ever created. It is a "semi-open world" with you traveling between hubs of large maps. Gameplay-wise, DA:O is excellent, with the player controlling a party of 4 characters exploring the massive map and doing various quests. You can either play this in real-time or pause and issue orders to characters similar to a turn-based game.
The RPG aspects like character building and story are stellar, with multiple classes, skill trees and a lengthy 60 hours story.
2 - Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout New Vegas is the best 3D Fallout game, which puts the player into the shoes of a courier wandering the nuclear desert of Nevada. This is another heavy RPG game, with more than 10 stats for players to juggle around, tons upon tons of perks, and hundred of main and side quests.
The best part of New Vegas is actually the story and faction system, in which your decisions during quests would affect the destiny of the region. Not many RPG manages to get a good story with decisions and consequences.
3 - The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
TES: Oblivion is probably the one game to play if you like the traditional fantasy settings. Similar to other Bethesda RPGs, players are put into the shoes of a bland, nondescript character whose task is to save the world. Combat-wise, Oblivion is not that deep, with only melee weapons, bows and magic... but its other NPC interactions are top-notch. From speak to sneak and barter, Oblivion is going to surprise you greatly.
The storyline is an epic one as well, with the protagonist closing hell's portal to prevent them from invading the world.
4 - GTA Vice City
GTA Vice City lets you play as Tommy Vercetti, a betrayed criminal who's out for revenge. He participates in the gang wars in Vice City to make things happen - all in order to further his goal of becoming the whole city's biggest crime boss. Tommy's Scarface-like rise to the top makes for extremely satisfying story moments.
Gameplay-wise, Vice City is fairly lacking - you can only shoot guns, use melee weapons and drive vehicles. However, the stories along with the map interactions are what make the game great.

5 - Knights of the Old Republic
If you are a fan of Star Wars or sci-fi in general, KOTOR would definitely fit the bill. This is the prime Star Wars role-playing experience with unique characters, creatures, vehicles and planets. You would step into the shoes of an unnamed Jedi on an adventure through some of the most popular locations in the Star Wars universe. From the desert of Tatooine to the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk - you can visit up to 8 enormous worlds on your own starship, the Ebon Hawk.
The combat is turn based, with you controlling a party from nine customizable characters. Your main character can use up to 40 different Force powers.
6 - GTA San Andreas
This is the seventh title in the GTA series and probably the most famous one. San Andreas brings you to the city of Los Santos (based on real-life Los Angeles). You would step into the shoes of protagonist Carl Johnson, coming back to the city after years of exile.
Upon seeing the terrible state of his gang, family and old friends, CJ decided to stay and aid his family. This is probably the best game in the 3D era, with the most engaging stories and the highest number of new mechanics and missions. The gameplay is similar to that of GTA Vice City, with the usual shooting and driving vehicles.
7 - Just Cause
Just Cause is an open-world action-adventure game with mechanics similar to the GTA series. If you enjoy the usual third-person perspective shooting, hand-to-hand combat, and driving vehicles, this is probably one of your first choices.
The best part of the game is probably its large map. Apparently, the area explored during the game is described as being over 1,024 km2, with 21 story missions and over 300 side missions to complete.

8 - Fallout 3
Fallout 3 is more or less the same as New Vegas, but a little bit less refined. The setting is different too, instead of being in the desert of New Vegas, the protagonist is a Vault Dweller in the capital, Washington DC. There are a total of 94 quests in the game, with multiple other unmarked ones.
The gameplay is pretty much the same as New Vegas, with a multitude of guns, melee weapons, and devices. There are a lot of skills, attributes and perk for you to pick too.
9 - Mafia
If you are a fan of the Mafia after watching The Godfather and Scarface, this game is definitely your best bet. Set within the fictional city of Lost Heaven during the 1930s, the player is put into the shoes of taxi driver-turned-mobster Tommy Angelo within the Salieri crime family.
Gameplay-wise, Mafia is very similar to the usual GTA games, with third-person shooter combat and vehicles driving. The difference is the aesthetics - Mafia's setting is half a century before GTA.
10 - Far Cry 2
Far Cry is an open world shooter set in the desert of Africa, with the players going on a quest to assassinate a notorious arms dealer. The game is an open ended experience in which players can progress and complete the mission as they see fit. From head-on assaults to stealthy infiltrations and assassinations, the playstyles that you can pick are endless.
The best part of Far Cry 2 is probably its location. The whole thing takes place in a sprawling African landscape, with terrain ranging from desert to savannah to jungle.
