In the latest meeting with investors, Sony has affirmed that PlayStation 4 hasn’t been out of Sony’s future plan yet. To be more specific they will continue to support PS4 regardless of the new PS5 planned to be released in 2020.
PS4 to receive support for at least three more years
With the rumors, teases and leaks about the next generation console of Sony – the PlayStation 5, many people have doubted that PlayStation 4 will still be a part of Sony’s plan in the future. It’s reasonable that Sony will have to drop some of their categories to focus on their upcoming console, and there are chances that PS4 is among those things.
However, Sony has reassured its PS4’s owner with the announcement in the last meeting with its investors. They’ve confirmed that PS4 will still be a critical part of their plan, and it will continue to provide support for PlayStation 4 for at least three more years.
To be more specific, Jim Ryan, President, and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed:
PS4 would “remain the engine of engagement and profitability for the next three years.” As PlayStaion 4 still significantly contribute to Sony’s success, they will keep using it to “will provide the fertile early adopter gamer base critical for Next Gen success.”
He further added that Sony will still bring some triple-A title to PS4, even after the next generation PS5 to be released.
Phew!
PS4 users are encouraged to switch to PS5 earlier than they would
PS4 is still the second best-selling console of Sony (following PS2), and Sony doesn’t expect a large wave of PS4 users moving to the new PS5 soon. Instead, they’ll continue to provide support for PS4 and expand their play base with the next generation console.
However, Sony also provides the PS5 with backward compatibility to PS4 games in order to attract users to switch to PS5 sooner than they’re planning to. Also, some upcoming games that available to PS5 are also playable on PS4, but not with such high graphics settings and performance as the latest generation.
We can’t say for sure that Sony’s strategies will work or not, but PS4 users can feel lucky as they can experience upcoming games at least until 2022 without having to upgrade to a newer console!
