Although the release of Minecraft 1.20 is still uncertain, players have gained insight into what they can expect from the Trails & Tales update through the game's beta versions. The most recent beta, 23w17a, which became available on April 26, 2023, introduced various changes and additions, such as adjustments to the sculk sensor and fresh in-game music.
Additionally, snapshot 23w17a for Java Edition presented seven new advancements that will eventually become part of Minecraft 1.20 upon its launch. The Bedrock Edition will also have achievements related to these advancements. Advancements are challenges of varying difficulty that players can complete to gain in-game rewards.
The question remains: what specific tasks must players accomplish to unlock these newly added advancements?
1. Smells Interesting
Acquire a sniffer egg
To find sniffer eggs in Minecraft 1.20, you must first locate suspicious sand, which may contain other objects such as pottery shards. Once you have found a sniffer egg, you will need to assist it in hatching. It is a crucial part of the process, as seeing a snifflet emerge from its shell is an unforgettable experience.
To obtain a sniffer egg, begin by creating a brush. This new tool can be crafted using two sticks and three pieces of string in a crafting table. Place the sticks in the center and bottom-center slots, and the string along the top row of crafting slots.
Next, search for suspicious sand blocks in desert pyramid and desert well structures. You can use the "/locate structure desert_pyramid" command to find the nearest pyramid if you don't mind using Minecraft commands. However, this command won't work for desert wells, which are classified as generic structures and are currently not listed in the available command syntax.
Carefully examine the sand blocks in desert pyramids and wells for suspicious sand blocks, which have a slightly different texture and small pits on the surface. To avoid losing the chance to brush them, be very cautious not to break them. These blocks are affected by gravity and will break if they fall and land, so don't mine them or the blocks beneath them.
To brush the suspicious sand blocks, equip your brush and right-click or press the use item/tool button on your controller. Hold the button while brushing the suspicious sand until the contents inside the sand pop out, causing the suspicious sand to return to ordinary sand.
2. Little Sniffs
Feed a snifflet, a baby sniffer
In order to breed Sniffers, players need 2 Torchflower seeds and 2 Sniffers. This is pretty straightforward as the sniffers automatically dig out a torchflower seed after some time. As sand blocks do not contain seeds, players need to bring one of the following blocks and place it near the sniffer:
- Dirt
- Grass Block
- Podzol
- Coarse Dirt
- Rooted Dirt
- Moss Block
- Mud
- Muddy Mangrove Roots
Afterward, get the two Sniffers close to each other and feed them the Torchflower seeds. They would enter love mode and a new baby sniffer a.k.a Snifflet would spawn after some time. Sniffer breeding has 5 minutes cooldown. Additionally, they also heal whenever they eat torchflower seeds.
Due to their tendency to wander around, players might need to create a breeding pen so that Sniffers can recognize each other and mate properly.
3. Planting the Past
Plant any seed dug up by a sniffer
A new plant called Torchflower has been added to the game. Torchflower seed can be planted on farmland and grows into a flower - these seeds can only be obtained from Sniffers digging them out.
4. Respecting the Remnants
Brush a suspicious block (suspicious sand/gravel) and uncover a pottery shard.
The 1.20 update is going to add a new block called 'suspicious sand'. It is going to be part of the desert biome, particularly near the desert temple spawns. Unlike the usual block, players need to gather suspicious sand with a shovel instead of a pickaxe.
Once the sand block is acquired, players need to use a new tool - the brush - to break it and extract the item hidden within. Apparently, the spawn is going to be random - one can get anything from pottery shards to random objects. Needless to say, breaking the block with any other tool would just destroy the item hidden inside.
5. Careful Restoration
Make a decorated pot block using four pottery shards in the crafting recipe
A collection of twenty items known as pottery shards are utilized in crafting decorated pots that feature ornate designs. These items can only be acquired by utilizing a brush to inspect suspicious sand or suspicious gravel blocks.
There is a possibility of obtaining pottery sherds by brushing such blocks discovered in trail ruins, ocean ruins, desert pyramids, and desert wells using a brush. Once the block has been inspected, it will transform into regular sand or gravel, and one of the twenty variants of pottery shards will be dropped.
6. Crafting a New Look
Craft any form of trimmed armor using a smithing table block
One of the most exciting aspects of the Minecraft Trails & Tales update is the option to add distinctive patterns to armor items, thanks to the new armor trimming feature.
The smithing template is a recently added item that performs two functions: It enables the creation of armor with unique designs and allows players to upgrade diamond items, tools, and weapons to netherite. There are a total of seventeen smithing templates, including the netherite upgrade template and sixteen armor trim templates.
7. Smithing With Style
Apply each of the following armor trim smithing templates to a piece of armor once: Spire, Snout, Rib, Ward, Silence, Vex, Tide, and Wayfinder.
Players need to find a number of rare templates to complete this advancement. Check this post for their locations.
