Both experienced and new players might find it a bit unclear how to unlock Fontaine in Genshin Impact 4.0. The upcoming update will introduce players to the Nation of Hydro, also known as the Nation of Justice. It's led by the Hydro Archon Focalors and is the 5th major region in Teyvat that players will explore. In Fontaine, the main focus will be on advancing the Traveler's story as they search for their lost sibling, along with introducing new gameplay mechanics.
The biggest addition in Genshin Impact 4.0 is the ability to explore underwater. Players will be able to navigate through underwater areas with their characters. These watery sections will be similar to the regular map but with unique exploration features, puzzles, and enemies.
Another new combat mechanic in Version 4.0 involves using energies called Pneuma and Ousia. But before players can experience these new elements, they need to access Fontaine.
How to unlock Fontaine as a new player
Fontaine is the fifth major region released after Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, and Sumeru. The good news for new players is that they don't need to catch up on the entire story to explore Fontaine.
During the version 4.0 livestream on Genshin Impact's official Twitch channel, the developer announced that new players only need to finish the Mondstadt story arc to access Fontaine.
After completing the Archon Quest Prologue: Act III "Song of the Dragon and Freedom," players will unlock a Teleport Waypoint on the border of Sumeru, which is adjacent to Fontaine. This quest involves Venti and La Signora. By using this Waypoint and moving east, players can reach Fontaine in Genshin Impact.
Exploring Fontaine is open to players, but their progress in the region's quests will be limited until they complete the Archon Quest "Caribert" in Sumeru.

How to unlock Fontaine as a seasoned player
For players who are up-to-date with the story and have completed the "Caribert" Archon Quest in Genshin Impact, they will automatically be guided to the new Archon Quest that happens in Fontaine.
Even if these experienced players haven't yet gone through the Realm of Farakhkert in Sumeru, they will still have the new Teleport Waypoint unlocked. This makes it convenient for them to quickly reach the Nation of Hydro and start the story in that region.
However, players aren't required to immediately follow the quests. Like new players, they can freely explore the region at their own pace. The benefit they have is that they can begin the regional Archon Quests whenever they choose, as long as they've finished "Caribert."
Genshin Impact 4.0 and the Fontaine region will be available on all platforms from August 16th.
