Obsidian are one of the toughest blocks in Minecraft. They are very slow to mine and require at least a Diamond pickaxe. However, regardless of which pickaxe you use, it'll take pretty long to gather an obsidian block into your inventory.
That's a problem, as Obsidian blocks are useful crafting material that players will need to get for making a Nether Portal. In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase how to get Obsidian quickly and easily in Minecraft 1.19.
Where to find Obsidian in Minecraft 1.19?
Obsidian blocks generally spawn where lava meets water on exterior levels, which means deep ravines or underwater volcanoes. However, it is possible to find them in generated structures within the game world.
Overworld | Ruined Portals, Ravines, Caves, Underwater Volcanoes
Woodland Mansions: In this structure, Obsidian might spawn on the mansions’ second and third floor, with a diamond block concealing it Ocean Ruin: This type of structure has a chance of appearing with a single Obsidian block inside |
Nether | Ruined Portals |
The End | Obsidian Pillars: You can find this type of structure on the End’s main island, anywhere down to Y=0.
End Cities, End Ships |
How to mine Obsidian faster
As mentioned above, you will need either a diamond or a netherite pickaxe to get Obsidian. A pickaxe from any inferior material will cause the Obsidian to break without dropping anything.
Enchanting a pickaxe with Efficiency greatly speeds up the farming process. With a beacon, the Haste and Haste II effects can be used to reduce mining time further.
A Netherite pickaxe with Efficiency V and Haste II (from a level 4 beacon) can break one block of obsidian every 1.55 seconds, while a non-enchanted, non-haste Netherite pickaxe needs 8.35 seconds.
Find Obsidian in chests
Alternatively, you might find Obsidian inside chests on Nether fortresses, bastion remnants, ruined portals, and villages.
In villages, look for the weaponsmith’s chest to find Obsidian. The weaponsmith’s house is a shelter-like structure with no walls, doors, and windows surrounding it.
The chances range from 8% in Nether fortresses to 46.4% in ruined portals. In villages and bastion remnants, the prospects sit between 24% to 25%
Bartering with piglins
You can also get obsidian blocks via bartering with Piglins. However, the chance to get this material from bartering is only 8.71% so you will need an average of 12 gold ingots for one obsidian block.
How to get Obsidian with Lava
The simplest way to obtain obsidian is to find lava and "drench" it with water to convert it into obsidian. One of the easiest ways to obtain obsidian is to find a lava pool, pour water on it, and then mine with a diamond pickaxe. However, if you want a large amount of obsidian, it can be pretty tricky.
Below is a step by step guide for creating obsidian with lava:
How to get lava
Firstly, players need to get lava. It can be found in a variety of locations, including in the Overworld and Nether. In the Overworld, lava primarily occurs deep underground or at the bottom of ravines. It is much more common in the Nether but players need to carry Lava back manually with buckets.
Lava can be acquired endlessly with a stalactite and a lava source block. If there is a lava source above the stalactite, there is a 5.9% chance for it to completely fill an empty cauldron underneath with lava. Refilling a cauldron with water or lava averages nearly one Minecraft day so players might want to get multiple stalactite and cauldron.
Lava casting
After obtaining sufficient amount of lava, players can create a mold or frame. In this process, the lava is placed as desired and then covered in water to convert it into obsidian. In this way, obsidian structures such as Nether portals can be created in place without the use of a diamond pickaxe.
When using a mold, the obsidian is usually casted one layer at a time to prevent lava from flowing.
Nether portals Obsidian farming
When traveling through a Nether portal, a new portal is created at the destination. Players can break the newly created portal for obsidian.
Firstly, players need to get at least 10 obsidian blocks before getting through a portal to the Nether. Afterwards, build a second portal at least 16 blocks away. Traveling through the second portal will bring you to a newly spawned portal in the Overworld. This portal will be about 128 blocks away from your original Overworld portal. You can then mine the new Overworld portal and repeat the process.
