Garuda, though unlocked later in the story, provides Clive with the power to control enemies through a grapple and even evade devastating counterattacks. The innate combos of the Phoenix Eikon tree synergize well with Garuda's abilities, often sending enemies airborne. Skillfully combining these attacks with Garuda's grapple ability allows for extended and powerful combos.

2. Phoenix And Bahamut

The Phoenix tree becomes a staple for players in Final Fantasy 16, gradually becoming second nature in the game's base combat. As players progress further and unlock the Bahamut tree, it might initially feel polarizing due to its focus on ranged abilities. However, the Phoenix Eikon offers ways to quickly close the gap with enemies and even includes a few ranged options of its own. Employing abilities like Satellite, action combos, and Rising Flames can lead to the enemy's stagger bar being decimated.

3. Titan And Odin

Titan and Odin stand out as two of the most potent and valuable Eikon classes in Final Fantasy 16. Titan's inherent counter ability inflicts significant stagger damage and induces a time stop, providing players with constant opportunities to disrupt enemy attacks. On the other hand, the Odin Eikon class also possesses a time-stop ability, but it requires initial contact to activate.

By skillfully executing the Titan Raging Fists counter and reaching an enemy's mid-way stagger point, players can capitalize on the stun effect to land the devastating Dancing Steel attack. This combination not only inflicts additional stagger damage but also fills the Zanketsu bar, setting the stage for maximum impact when the enemy is fully staggered.

4. Shiva And Titan

While Shiva and Titan may not be an obvious pairing in terms of complementary Eikon abilities, Final Fantasy 16's intricate combat system allows for effective synergy between both trees. Shiva's Eikon tree excels in crowd control, thanks to her Cold Snap ability, which not only grants Clive enhanced maneuverability but also has the capability to permafreeze minor targets. Taking advantage of this freezing effect, players can set up devastating combos with some of Titan's most powerful abilities, such as Wind Up and Earthen Fury.

5. Garuda and Titan

The combination of Garuda and Titan abilities in Final Fantasy 16 proves to be a perfect match. By utilizing Garuda's grappling abilities and Titan's charging attacks, players can ensure that Titan's slower yet powerful strikes connect, dealing massive damage. A notable feature of Garuda's Deadly Embrace is that when upgraded and used in mid-air, it elevates Clive higher while attacking with one of Garuda's Claws.

Executing this ability twice allows Clive to ascend high enough to follow up with the air version of Upheaval, inflicting tremendous damage on a stunned target below.

6. Odin And Shiva

In Final Fantasy 16's story, Odin stands as one of the last Eikon trees to be unlocked, and it proves to be a deadly addition, granting Clive a completely new combo route and improved mobility. Shiva's Ice Age ability is particularly effective for launching targets into the air or extending combos using basic attacks.

By skillfully combining Shiva's Cold Snap, Odin's Rift Slip, or Heaven's Cloud, players can execute extended combos with incredible damage potential. This versatility allows players to interchange multiple abilities between Odin and Shiva, providing a plethora of options to complement the chosen main Eikon tree.

7. Ifrit and Ramuh

In Final Fantasy 16, Ramuh is the third Eikon players can access as they delve deeper into the game's lore and uncover its grander narrative. As the monarch of lightning, Ramuh boasts an array of immensely damaging abilities, some of which hold the highest numbers in the game.

Although the abilities of the Ifrit Eikon tree are acquired at a slower pace compared to others, once obtained, Ifrit and Ramuh form a formidable team. By combining Lightning Rod and Ignition abilities, players can chain multiple hits from both and maximize the damage output, especially when utilizing the Limit Break.

8. Bahamut and Ramuh

For players who prefer a more strategic approach and enjoy casting powerful spells from a distance to control enemies and evade direct combat with formidable bosses, the Eikon abilities of Bahamut and Ramuh are an excellent choice. Bahamut's Wings Of Light is a remarkable ability that enables Clive to avoid attacks while charging up potent magic in the form of Megaflare.

Once unleashed, powerful light projectiles rain down on targets, opening up opportunities to pair it with more abilities. Players can choose from various options within Ramuh's abilities, such as Thunderstorm or even Judgment Bolt, to create devastating combos.

Unlike the combo-boosting Dire Wolf Jess, the Genji Gloves enhance damage output universally, allowing you to diversify your battle strategies while reaping the accessory's benefits. Acquire the Genji Gloves by reaching 2,365 Renown.

6. Cleric's Medallion +1

Even the most skilled players are bound to endure damage in Final Fantasy 16, given the ferocity of the game's enemies. It's always advisable to keep a few healing items at hand, such as the common potions found throughout Valisthea. The Cleric's Medallion, obtained by defeating the flying monster Chirada in Lostwing, provides some assistance when you find yourself taking significant damage. This accessory boosts the potency of potions by 20 percent, ensuring that each consumed potion restores a bit more health. For a more substantial increase, aim to obtain the Cleric's Medallion +1 at 205 Renown, which grants a 40 percent boost in potion effectiveness. Alternatively, the High Cleric's Medallion at 715 Renown provides a 25 percent bonus to high potions.

5. Badge Of Might +1

Battling and leveling up are essential aspects of progressing steadily in your FF16 journey. Final Fantasy 16 currently has both supporters and critics. However, there is one aspect that both sides generally agree on: the combat system is highly enjoyable and represents an improvement compared to previous action games in the series.

Most players can expect to invest approximately 35 to 40 hours in an Action Focus run of Final Fantasy 16 to complete the story and witness the conclusion of Clive's journey. This duration ensures that the combat remains challenging as intended by the developers. To survive and progress, players will need to master the combat system, focusing on essential elements while disregarding optional content.

In the game, players have the ability to equip Eikons to Clive, which grants him abilities with cooldowns and skills that can be used repeatedly. Of course, an engaging combat system wouldn't be complete without a variety of monsters. Final Fantasy 16 offers a wide range of creatures, including random monsters and unique ones known as Notorious Marks. While many of these monsters are familiar from previous games, they have received fresh designs. So, which redesigned monsters stand out as the coolest in the game?

1. Moogles

Moogles are technically considered monsters in the Final Fantasy series, although some view them as a distinct race due to their sentience. Nonetheless, Moogles are beloved creatures, especially Nektar in Final Fantasy 16. Nektar manages the Notorious Marks board, which is where players encounter some of the game's wildest creatures. Moogles first appeared in Final Fantasy 3 and have remained a staple since, although their appearances have evolved over time. Nektar's adorable, koala-like form is one of the cutest iterations in recent memory.

2. Bomb

Bombs are among the most dangerous monsters in the Final Fantasy series. They initially appeared as large, orb-like creatures with teeth in Final Fantasy 2. Typically, they are depicted as round orbs, often red or orange, with flames shooting out from the top. The more they are hit, the greater the chance they will explode, dealing significant damage to the party. In Final Fantasy 16, their redesign portrays them as unsettling, lava-covered skulls that have been reanimated, creating a creepy aesthetic.

3. Red Mousse

Like Bombs, Red Mousse also made its debut in Final Fantasy 2. Red Mousse represents just one type of jelly-like monster in the series, with the more common version being called Flans. Regardless of their names, these creatures share similar structural bodies. They are sentient blobs, but in Final Fantasy 16, they gain a menacing edge with horrific teeth and tentacles that Clive must face.

4. Iron Giant

It's important not to confuse Final Fantasy's Iron Giant with the beloved animated film from the late 90s. The Iron Giants in Final Fantasy are much more menacing, as they are hulking armored beings wielding swords that would make even Cloud's Buster Sword blush. They first appeared as rare encounters in Final Fantasy 2. In Final Fantasy 16, the first Iron Giant serves as a challenging boss. Its redesign introduces cool elements such as a spiked shield, a sword resembling a gunblade, and a chest reminiscent of the Heartless.

5. Ahriman

Ahriman initially held significant importance as one of the final bosses in Final Fantasy 3. However, its status diminished in subsequent games, appearing as a regular monster encounter. Most depictions portray Ahriman as giant eyeballs with bat wings, which is largely unchanged in Final Fantasy 16. However, the redesign includes gangly limbs and liver spots, lending it a decrepit appearance. Although it may not be a boss anymore, Ahriman remains a formidable enemy capable of casting Doom, which can instantly kill players who fail to dodge its attacks.

6. Lich

Lich was another prominent monster in the early days of the series, serving as one of the Four Fiends that controlled the world in the original Final Fantasy. While its designs have varied, subsequent iterations of Lich retained the Grim Reaper-like aesthetic with a few minor tweaks. Final Fantasy 16 takes a dramatic departure by portraying Lich as afaceless, oozed alien or a deep blue/purple naked version of Slender Man wielding a scythe.

7. Behemoth

Behemoth made its first appearance as a conceptual artwork for the original Final Fantasy but officially debuted in Final Fantasy 2. Initially, it wasn't particularly menacing, but as the series progressed, Behemoth became increasingly iconic and intimidating. Final Fantasy 15 featured the largest version of Behemoth thus far, but Final Fantasy 16's redesign adds even more terrifying elements. The Behemoth is covered in spikes, capable of standing upright, and can effortlessly hurl meteors at Clive.

8. Coeurl

Coeurl, another monster from Final Fantasy 2, has seen little change in its design over the past few decades. Typically resembling a cat, sometimes with spots and long tentacle-like whiskers, the Coeurl in Final Fantasy 16 receives a significant menacing upgrade. Its tentacles become longer and resemble power cables attached to two massive daggers. Additionally, Coeurl emanates electricity, allowing it to shock opponents. It first appears as a boss, followed by encounters with Kupka and an Eikon battle with Titan in Final Fantasy 16.

Each Eikon in Final Fantasy 16 holds value in its own unique way. While individual preferences may lead to different utilization approaches, I have personally dedicated around 60 hours to playing FF16. During my gameplay experience, I found myself utilizing certain abilities more frequently than others, and based on that, I have compiled the following ranking. It's important to recognize that this ranking is subjective and reflects my personal opinion. I considered factors such as the overall strength of the Eikon and its abilities, as well as their usefulness in enhancing my gameplay.

However, it's crucial to understand that even if an Eikon is ranked lower in my assessment, it does not imply that they are completely useless or should be disregarded. Many of them possess one or two essential powers that are indispensable for combos or maximizing damage output.

S-Tier Eikons

Bahamut

Bahamut, the Eikon associated with Prince Dion, indisputably holds the title of the most powerful Eikon. It possesses a set of abilities that are all formidable in their own right. One ability, in particular, stands out as it unleashes destructive forces upon the battlefield during combat. This ability is known as Wings of Light, which charges up the devastating Megaflare attack. Additionally, Bahamut's arsenal includes Impulse, which inflicts continuous damage on an enemy upon activation.

Flare Breath emits a steady stream of fire damage in a cone shape, while Satellite summons fragments that launch attacks whenever magic is used, making it especially appealing for magic-oriented builds. However, the ultimate standout ability is Gigaflare, which serves as one of the game's most powerful finishing moves in combination with other abilities. Bahamut undeniably reigns as the strongest Eikon in Final Fantasy 16, with only one other Eikon coming close to matching its might.

Odin

Odin, the Eikon of darkness, stands as another formidable force in the S-Tier category within Final Fantasy 16. Once you gain control over Odin from Barnabas Tharmr, you will possess all the available powers in the game, except for Leviathan, which, as of the current writing, does not seem to be present.

Odin's unique ability allows you to transform your blade into Odin's Blade. Inflicting damage with this empowered weapon and utilizing Odin's abilities contributes to filling the Zantetsuken Meter. Gungnir, one of Odin's abilities, delivers powerful and devastating strikes. Heaven's Cloud propels him swiftly forward and can be repeatedly employed.

Furthermore, Odin possesses the advantageous Rift Slip ability, enabling instant recovery. For those seeking additional melee attacks, Dancing Steel is the recommended choice, as it allows for rapid strikes by employing a second sword. Overall, Odin embodies an unstoppable whirlwind of continuous melee assaults.

A-Tier Eikons

Garuda

There is a case to be made for raising the ranking of both of these Eikons. Personally, I don't utilize Garuda as frequently, but Deadly Embrace stands out as one of the game's finest abilities. The ability to draw enemies in and launch a savage assault upon them is highly effective.

While I have a fondness for Garuda, I find some of the attack angles to be less appealing, particularly when leaping into the air for strikes without a knock-up option. Nevertheless, Garuda remains a potent Eikon with strong abilities that contribute to some impressive combos.

Titan

Titan's greatest attribute is arguably its exceptional defensive capabilities. Additionally, it possesses powerful punches reminiscent of those seen in Jojo, which can parry incoming attacks and deliver additional hits and damage.

Even though I consider Titan to be somewhat limiting, I consistently rely on Upheaval to round up a group of enemies and follow up with Gigaflare in Bahamut's moveset. Even if I don't have Titan equipped, I usually have that particular move in my skill repertoire.

B-Tier Eikons

Phoenix/Ifrit

The initial Eikon ability set in Final Fantasy 16 consists of Phoenix/Ifrit, and it is decent overall. It offers several useful abilities, but personally, I primarily rely on one move, Ignition. This move allows me to charge at and gather a group of enemies before unleashing Upheaval. However, the primary movement ability, Phoenix Shift, can be interrupted, which is quite disappointing.

Flames of Rebirth, while powerful, only heals a portion of HP instead of providing further assistance. It presents a solid array of abilities, but it falls short of greatness. I find it most effective when engaging in close-range combat.

Ramuh

Cid Telamon, one of the notable characters in Final Fantasy 16, is undeniably cool, and so are his abilities. However, I personally do not find his powers appealing enough to continue using them, except for the area-of-effect Pile Drive.

His thunder abilities have the potential to deal significant damage if properly set up. However, the requirement for such setup becomes a drawback for me, as I prefer a more straightforward approach when fighting in Final Fantasy 16.

Shiva

Among the Eikons available in Final Fantasy 16, Shiva is the one I utilized the least. Although Jill Warrick may be a great character, her abilities are generally considered the weakest in the game. If you are looking for powerful movement abilities and the ability to reposition yourself effectively, Shiva excels in that regard.

However, I feel that other characters perform these tasks better. Additionally, Shiva's powers lack significant impact in terms of damage output. By the time you acquire her abilities, the need for increased damage becomes more pressing. She remains a solid option, but she lacks individual power. Her abilities are best utilized when combined with another Eikon ability set.

The developers have successfully crafted a remarkable title that will be remembered by many.

While it is undeniable that Final Fantasy 16 deserves considerable praise, it is important to acknowledge its few shortcomings. Particularly in terms of its RPG elements when compared to other contemporary titles, there are areas where the game could have excelled even further.

1. Best: Boss Battles

Undoubtedly, the most impressive and captivating aspect of Final Fantasy 16 lies in its grandiose and thrilling boss battles. These encounters seamlessly blend quick-time events and seamless transitions from cutscenes to gameplay, enhancing the overall experience rather than hindering it. Within the game's narrative, players will face a diverse array of Dominants and Eikons, engaging in awe-inspiring confrontations.

Final Fantasy 16 excels in multiple aspects when it comes to its boss fights, including stunning visuals, powerful attacks, gripping build-up, compelling dialogue, and a standout soundtrack. The quality of these encounters rivals the cinematic sequences seen in Santa Monica Studios' God of War 3. While some boss battles may occur during free-roaming hunts, where players pursue dangerous and lethal foes in the semi-open world, the true essence lies in the enthralling and breathtaking clashes with various dominants. From beginning to end, the tension escalates continuously as Clive faces off against relentless adversaries and warring nations, solidifying Final Fantasy 16 as a strong contender for Game of the Year.

2. Worst: Lack of Customization & RPG Features

Similar to its predecessors, Final Fantasy 16 falls short in terms of offering substantial player customization, especially when compared to many contemporary RPG titles. Games like The Witcher 3, Elden Ring, and Cyberpunk 2077 have provided players with extensive freedom to personalize and modify their characters according to their preferences. This departure from customization in Final Fantasy 16 has surprised fans, considering the success and popularity of such features in other titles beyond the franchise.

While Final Fantasy 16 incorporates certain RPG elements, they are rudimentary and barely noticeable. Players will find minimal engagement with items or accessories within the main menu, apart from equipping new weapons or unlocking abilities. It is evident that this installment has aimed to prioritize action-oriented gameplay, but the absence of robust RPG features detracts from the overall player experience, leaving a notable void.

3. Best: Combat

One of the standout features in Final Fantasy 16 is its combat system, which bears a striking resemblance to the action-packed gameplay found in Devil May Cry, thanks to the involvement of combat director Ryota Suzuki. Players can unlock various abilities as they gain access to different Eikons, allowing for the execution of stylish combos and seamless evasive maneuvers.

Even after completing the main story, Final Fantasy 16 offers a plethora of additional activities to keep players engaged. These include new game plus, arcade mode, stage replay, and practice mode, showcasing the developers' commitment to emphasizing the game's replayability factor.

4. Worse: Side Quests

While it is important to acknowledge that a handful of side quests in Final Fantasy 16 offer enjoyable experiences, the majority of them unfortunately fall flat. Most of these quests involve tedious tasks like retrieving items for NPCs in The Hideaway or simply engaging in conversations that require traveling to different locations. Although some of these quests provide interesting context and storytelling related to specific time periods in the game, they tend to be more time-consuming than rewarding.

Despite the existence of side quests that offer useful rewards, players may feel obligated to complete them out of necessity rather than genuine interest, often resorting to consulting guides for assistance. Many argue that games like The Witcher 3 have set a standard for high-quality side quests, and Final Fantasy 16's side quests could have undoubtedly been improved to meet those expectations.

5. Best: Characters & Voice Acting

In Final Fantasy 16, the strength of its characters and the quality of voice acting stand out as exceptional. From the main protagonists such as Clive Rosfield, Jill Warrick, Joshua Rosfield, and others, to the side characters, notably the villains, the game showcases some of the most remarkable voice performances in the gaming industry. Without delving into spoilers, director Hiroshi Takai and the creative team have crafted compelling character arcs, showcasing their progression and personal journeys throughout the narrative, which includes unexpected twists and emotional moments that resonate with players.

While Final Fantasy 16's story spans multiple time periods and evolves with each quest, one consistent and positive aspect is the depth and likability of its characters. Players will quickly form attachments to these well-developed individuals, adding an extra layer of engagement to the overall experience.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Looks like Capcom is remaking all the classic Resident Evil games with the new gameplay and graphical style. RE4 remake will launch on March 24, 2023. It will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. No last-gen versions have been announced.

Similar to the RE 2 and 3 remakes, RE4 remake will deliver truly next-gen visuals, modernized gameplay, and a reimagined, deeper storyline while faithfully preserving the essence and maintaining the legacy of the original. Based on the trailer, there might be more nighttime scenes than in the original, which means a bigger focus on horror.

Final Fantasy XVI

Square Enix has just revealed a gameplay trailer for their next mainline FF game, Final Fantasy 16. It is scheduled to come out in summer 2023. Final Fantasy 16 follows the journey of a warrior named Clive Rosfield, who embarks on a quest for revenge, alongside his brother Joshua Rosfield and his foster sister Jill Warrick.

The central part of the plot is the Eikons, summoned monsters controlled by or manifesting through humans called Dominants.

The Callisto Protocol

This is a new story-driven, single-player survival horror game from the creators of Dead Space. In this game, players would fight to survive the horrors locked within the walls of Black Iron Prison after a mysterious outbreak throws it into chaos. Jacob will battle the prison’s guards and inmates, who are mutating into creatures called Biophage, as he uncovers the mysteries of the moon, its prison, and the United Jupiter Company who runs it.

The game used to be part of the PUBG universe, but after bad reception from fans, the devs have decided to scrap that element.

Spider-Man: Remastered PC port

Looks like almost all PlayStation exclusive titles are coming to PC. Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered is coming to Windows PC on Aug. 12. It is the upgraded version of Insomniac's hit action game for PlayStation consoles and would include the add-on DLC The City That Never Sleeps. Furthermore, Insomniac and Nixxes also plan to bring Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales to PC sometime this fall.
