Everything was going smoothly during the investigation of the refinery until I reached the basement. The underground complex turned out to be a perfect hiding place for the terrifying xenomorphs from Aliens: Dark Descent. Since my squad of Colonial Marines entered, they have been relentlessly harassed by these nightmarish creatures designed by H.R. Giger. Now, they find themselves cornered in a narrow corridor, desperately trying to fend off the xenomorphs' relentless advance. One of the marines works on hacking a control panel to open an escape route, but time is running out, and the cramped space offers no means of evasion.

In the nick of time, Sergeant Kurtz steps up with his trusty shotgun and takes a shot at the approaching xenomorphs. Although it stuns the leader of the pack, the Praetorian, the situation remains dire. Finally, Tekker MacDonald successfully cracks the door code, allowing the squad to escape, but not without a last stand of intense firepower and a well-placed grenade that finally takes down the xenomorphs.

Despite surviving this harrowing encounter, my marines are in bad shape, low on supplies, and overcome with fear. Though we are close to completing the mission, I decide to retreat and return with fresh troops. The xenomorphs will likely be stronger, but it's a risk I'm willing to take.

Among the various attempts to replicate the tension and action of Aliens, Dark Descent stands out as the first game since AvP 2 to truly capture the essence of the film. Developer Tindalos Interactive has skillfully blended stealth, strategy, and intense gunfights to create a captivating real-time tactics game that does justice to James Cameron's masterpiece.

Less yapping, more shooting

Dark Descent begins with its weakest aspect, which is the setting on Lethe, a moon infested with xenomorphs and owned by the Weyland Yutani tech-startup. The Colonial Marine frigate U.S.S Otago has crash-landed there, and the game unfolds through an elaborate prologue that also serves as a tutorial, explaining the cause of the crash. While Tindalos Interactive manages to capture the cinematic essence and soundscape of the original films directed by Ridley Scott and James Cameron, the script falls short in terms of wit and subtlety. The dialogue feels forced and awkward, detracting from the overall experience.

However, once you find yourself stranded on Lethe, the game compensates for its narrative weaknesses with the stories you create. In the linear-ish campaign, you lead a four-person marine team on various missions across the moon to either improve your situation or investigate the infestation of bugs. One such mission takes you to a replica of Hadley's Hope named Dead Hills, a vast colony with multiple buildings spread across different floors, including a bar, an armoury, a clinic, a command centre, and intricate mining tunnels below.

Unlike most tactics games, Dark Descent lets you control the entire squad simultaneously, moving them with the right-mouse button and interacting with the environment using the left. Though unusual at first, this approach makes sense as it highlights the vulnerability of your marines when isolated. While exploring the mission area, your shoulder-lamp helps you interact with objects, and the motion-tracker in the bottom-right corner of the screen detects movement within a 60-meter radius. It becomes essential to avoid the highlighted skittering white dots on the tracker since encountering the xenomorphs is not only dangerous but progressively worse with each encounter.

Once a xenomorph detects your presence, the hive is alerted, and the creatures enter hunt mode, actively pursuing your location. Your squad automatically fires at the aliens to hold them off, but this alone rarely proves sufficient to halt their advance. To access a more elaborate skill menu, you can press the spacebar. From there, you can employ tactics like suppressive fire, which slows down encroaching aliens in a wide cone, or use grenades and shotgun blasts to eliminate specific threats. However, the use of these skills requires Command Points, and by default, you only have three in your pool. While they regenerate automatically, the process is slow.

Hence, the core of Dark Descent's tactical gameplay involves effectively deploying these abilities, understanding when to stand your ground and when to change tactics. Nevertheless, no matter how adeptly you fend off the xenomorphs, there will be lasting consequences from the encounters. Each attack you make increases the aggressiveness of the aliens, indicated by a creeping ticker in the top right of the screen. As this ticker escalates, more aliens will appear in the mission area, and eventually, a massive horde will come your way.

Additionally, these attacks also raise your squad's stress levels, leading them to shoot more erratically and consume more ammunition. To alleviate stress, they can use Naproleve pills or take a quick rest by welding the doors of a room shut. However, both of these options consume vital resources, adding to the strategic depth of the game.

Bug spray

All of these elements come together to create an exhilarating and suspenseful experience, akin to a thrilling rollercoaster ride. Even a single xenomorph entering a room can escalate into a prolonged and intense battle, leaving your marines terrified, injured, captured, or worse, dead. And all of this happens before you even consider completing your objectives, which are often complex and unforgiving, just like your encounters with the xenomorphs.

For instance, in Dead Hills, you must locate the command center and use it to find six missing colonists, escorting each one to your ARC from their hiding spots. The mission is vast, relentless, and exhausting, making it unlikely to finish in one sitting. A crucial aspect of Dark Descent is knowing when to abort a mission and retreat to the Otago to recover and send a fresh squad the next day.

Back at the Otago, Dark Descent takes on more of an XCOM-like strategy layer, where you manage your marines. You can treat their physical and mental wounds, promote them to unlock new skills, equip them with better weapons acquired from resources gathered during missions, and research new technologies using xenomorph samples. While not as deep as XCOM's strategy layer and more derivative than the actual missions, it serves a vital purpose. Every passing day increases the infestation level of Lethe, so giving your marines a break between missions poses a risk of the situation becoming more perilous when they return.

The combination of these ideas creates numerous emergent challenges, both on a small scale, such as deciding where to set up defenses during an impending alien onslaught, and on a larger scale, like revisiting previous missions to gather additional resources and retrieve abandoned sentry turrets. Some minor issues exist, like marines occasionally getting stuck on the environment, and repetitive dialogue from the squad. However, it is in the storytelling where the quality noticeably declines.

Comparing Dark Descent to Isolation for Alien, it successfully follows a similar path in building a game that embraces the themes and ideas of the film Aliens. While its execution isn't quite as flawless, it's still a highly enjoyable and authentic Aliens game, making it one of the best in the franchise.

The Resident Evil 4 Remake offers charms that are small objects that can be added to your storage case. These charms provide advantages and bonuses that are useful for surviving the challenges of the game. I obtained the Black Bass charm during my playthrough, which boosted the effectiveness of healing from consuming black bass by 100%. As a result, I was able to endure combat by consuming black bass as if I were a crazed fish enthusiast.

There is a wide range of charm effects available and you can attach up to three charms to your case. This allows you to customize the benefits to suit your specific play style or weapon preferences. In this article, I will provide instructions on how to unlock the shooting range, as well as tips for obtaining charms. Additionally, I will provide information on how to attempt to reroll charms, and a comprehensive list of all the charms we have discovered thus far, along with their effects.

In order to obtain charms you must first visit the shooting range managed by the merchant. This shooting range can be found in the merchant's primary store near the lake in chapter three. To access the store, you must first pass through the Quarry, after which you will arrive at the merchant's shop. Once there, take the elevator to the right of the merchant to descend into the shooting range.

By successfully completing shooting challenges in the shooting range, you can earn tokens of varying value: bronze, silver, or gold. However, each challenge only allows for the use of certain weapons. To achieve the highest score, or to obtain an additional gold token by hitting every skull symbol, you must fulfill the extra condition to unlock the bonus round. Although there is only one shooting range in the village area, there are multiple ranges in the castle and on the island, and each one offers new challenges to complete. You can also replay old challenges at each range, so there is no need to worry about achieving perfect scores before leaving the village.

There are four crucial pointers to bear in mind while playing the shooting range in the Resident Evil 4 Remake:

• You can obliterate all targets simultaneously by shooting the dynamite.
• Headshots do not award additional points.
• Rifles and the Punisher can shoot through targets.
• It is permissible to switch weapons during certain challenges.

After obtaining tokens go to the prize vending machine located near the entrance and use the tokens to obtain a random charm. Inserting three gold tokens increases your likelihood of obtaining a rare charm, but you can also use a combination of token types. Once you have obtained your charms, you can attach up to three of them to your attache case at the typewriter, thereby receiving their respective benefits.

In chapter 11, you will encounter the merchant who allows you to buy gold tokens for three spinels each. However, since spinels are limited and precious, it is not recommended to purchase too many gold tokens. There are a total of 30 charms that you can obtain, categorized into three different levels of rarity: common, rare, and epic. Here is a list of all the charms that have been acquired thus far:

It is important to keep in mind that saving the game cannot be used to change the charms that you have obtained. Even if you save the game and try to reroll by using three sets of three gold tokens, you will still get the same three charms you received previously. If you want to reroll charms, it is recommended to try different combinations of tokens as this can lead to slightly different outcomes. Although you can obtain charms that you already have, it is not possible to stack them to increase their effectiveness. Instead, you can sell them back to the merchant for a small amount of money.

Amongst the charms I have discovered so far, those that provide a 20% increase in crafting frequency are considered powerful as they enhance the probability of obtaining additional bullets when crafting that particular type of ammunition. Another strong charm is Ada Wong, which lowers the cost of repairing body armor. This is especially useful since you will need to repair your armor frequently at every Merchant you encounter throughout the game.

In my opinion, the most potent charm that I came across is the Black Bass. It amplifies the amount of health recovered from consuming fish by 100%. There are numerous locations in the game where you can acquire a significant amount of bass, such as the Lake in the village, the fountain near the Courtyard in the castle, or in the watery part of the Depths area. The larger bass takes up a lot of space in your inventory, but if you fill your case with smaller ones, you won't have to worry about using healing items at all. Moreover, the bass seems to regenerate, so you can revisit the castle fountain to obtain more in subsequent chapters.

C - At “Lakeside Settlement” on the map with dynamite throwers. Inside the house located in the center where a dynamite thrower is present, you can find the item sitting on the broken roof.

Chapter 2

R - Pest Control: The leaflet can be found near the first Merchant you encounter. To progress, you'll need to eliminate some rats in the Factory. Once inside, you can find one rat in the damaged hallway to the right, while the remaining two are located in the room where you received the parry tutorial.

C - Once you've used the Hexagonal Emblem to unlock a gate, head upstairs and enter the initial hut on your left.

Chapter 3

R - Viper Hunter: Upon leaving the Town Hall, you'll see the request posted on the wall adjacent to the merchant. To fulfill the request, you need to locate and sell three Vipers to the merchant. Although you'll come across them eventually, it's possible to obtain all three Vipers at once towards the conclusion of this chapter by visiting the fish farm.

R - Grave Robber: When you arrive at the church, avoid entering the save room and instead proceed around the building to find an alley where the request letter is located. Once you've obtained the letter, return to the graveyard in front of the church and shoot the V-emblems situated on the double graves near the center of the area.

R - Destroy the Blue Medallions 2: Along the main path just after entering The Quarry, will be on the wall.

C - Jump down the ladder near the merchant. Head to the end of the pier and direct your gaze upwards to locate it situated between the roof and wooden crates.

Chapter 4

W - Kitchen Knife: To find it, head to the Farm area and make your way to the large barn situated in the northeast section of the region. Climb the windmill and follow the path upstairs within the windmill to gain entry into the barn.

R - Egg Hunt: Prior to boarding the boat, take a look at the wall to your left and ensure that you have located and sold a golden egg. You can find a golden egg at a chicken farm situated on the eastern shoreline of the lake.

W - Red9 Pistol: Once you have access to the boat and can navigate it around the lake, you'll find it situated on a shipwreck located at the center of the lake.

C - North-west of the lake. Unlock the locked gate using the Insignia Key, and then ascend the ladder situated behind the gate. This will take you to the Forest Altar area where you can spot the Castellan through a fence and shoot at him.

R - Catch Me A Big Fish: When in the Lakeside Settlement, utilize the Insignia Key to unlock the door, which leads to a tunnel where you can find the blue letter. To catch a big fish, head towards the Boat House located at the southeast corner of the lake, and harpoon it. In case the fish doesn't appear initially, try driving back across the lake and return to the Boat House again.

Chapter 5

R - A Savage Mutt: The task request can be found on the wall near the Merchant outside the Town Hall. To complete it, you must kill a wolf in Village Square. The wolf can be spawned by exploring the attic in the Village Chief's Manor and boosting up Ashley. In the attic, there is a Clockwork Castellan. Once you return to the Village Square, the wolf should have spawned.

C - When you're at Village Chief's Manor, go to the attic and pull the lever. Boost Ashley up the ladder and you'll find it on the left side of the attic, behind a yellow crate that can be destroyed.

Chapter 6

C - Along a hill path after the first few enemies. The Castellan is on the right under a bonfire. Just before reaching the “Checkpoint” area.

Chapter 7

W - Boot Knife: Make sure to pick up the item that the first enemy drops in Chapter 7, which is encountered in the Chapel.

R - Destroy the Blue Medallions 3: Go through the gate you shot open with the cannon. Behind it, you find the blue request letter on the wall.

C - Following the encounter with Garrador, proceed to unlock the dungeon door and ascend the stairs to the storage room. At the top of one of the shelves, you can find the Castellan.

Chapter 8

C - Once you exit the castle and reach the top of the walls, a Giant will attack you with rocks. To avoid this, drop down on the right side of the tower, towards the west side of the map. Then enter the second tower from the west. On the rooftop of the tower, move around to find the Castellan located at the end.

Chapter 9

R - Destroy the Blue Medallions 4: In the typewriter save room with the merchant on the table.

R - More Pest Control: On the wall left of the Headless Statue.

• Rat 1: In the Dining Hall.
• Rat 2: In the same corridor after exiting Armory.
• Rat 3: Found at the start of Chapter 10.

C - In the northwest corner of the courtyard maze.

Chapter 10

• Rat 3: Enter the room to the right of the 3-headed statue, then enter the dark hallway on the right to find the rat.

R - Merciless Knight: In the room located on the right side of the statue with three heads, you can find the request on top of a drawer. As Leon, make sure to defeat the knights in the Mausoleum before doing anything else. It's recommended to do this immediately as the path will already be accessible.

W - CQBR Assault Rifle: To find it, head to the southern part of the library and then climb upstairs. After that, use the Cubic Device to unlock the Square Lock Box.

C - The Castellan can be found just outside the merchant's location in the sewers, with its head visible behind the bars. The Castellan is located directly across from the merchant's room and is hanging upside down. To locate it, move as close as possible to the bars and look up.

Chapter 11

C - The Castellan can be found on the wall of the Stopover building after the first minecart ride. It can be shot from inside the building, and it's recommended to collect it before getting on the second minecart.

R - Insect Hive: After passing the cart section, you can find the request hanging on a wooden pallet in the east of the "Hive" area. To complete this objective, you must destroy all four entrances to the Hive, which are the yellow glowing sacks located on the ceiling in the middle of the area.

Chapter 12

C - At the beginning of the chapter, board the golden gondola and pass through the gate. Prior to ascending the stairs, it can be located on a box in the northwestern corner of the room.

R - Jewel Thief: The request is located on the wall adjacent to the elevator and merchant. However, in order to obtain it, you must first find a scratched emerald located in a crow's nest in the Courtyard. To do this, exit through the western gate and head north towards the merchant. Locate the crow's nest and shoot it down to obtain the emerald, which can then be sold to the merchant.

R - The Disgrace of the Salazar Family: On the same wall as the other Merchant Request. To complete this request, you need to deface a portrait that can be found in the Throne Room. Start by opening a shrine located in the right corner of the room to obtain a golden chicken egg. Then, find a small painting in another corner of the room. Equip the golden egg from your inventory and throw it at the painting located above the two red chairs. Make sure to hit the correct painting, as throwing the egg at the wrong one or eating it will require you to reload the game and try again.

Chapter 13

C - Proceed past the enemies with rocket launchers and pass through the gate. You will arrive at a point where the path divides. Take the right path and continue until you reach the right corner of the area, where you will find the Castellan positioned between a green forklift and an orange container truck.

W - LE 5: Once you obtain the Level 1 Keycard, you need to activate the Power Control Lever to redirect power to the left side. After that, you can use the Level 1 Keycard to open the Freezer door. Inside the freezer, you have to solve a puzzle to unlock the treasure behind the door.

U - Biosensor Scope: In the Incubation Lab. Use the Level 2 card on the door in the hallway south of the Freezer.

Chapter 14

R - Destroy the Blue Medallions 5: At the entrance to a merchant shop.

R - Even More Pest Control: In the next Merchant room after leaving Waste Disposal. Make sure you backtrack to the previous room before dropping down into the next area.

• Rat 1: At the entrance of Waste Disposal.
• Rat 2: Immediately after the bridge Ashley can raise.
• Rats 3 and 4: At the end of Waste Disposal where you flipped the Power-Reroute switch.

R - The Wandering Dead: After entering the door that Ashley opens with a wrecking ball, the item can be seen resting on top of a box. The enemy's location is indicated on the map. This formidable foe can be defeated with a single rocket shot, which yields 50,000 ptas.

C - Following the cutscene in the Amber Storeroom, head through the gates and enter the tunnel. Continue walking towards the south and then turn towards the right. You will find it sitting on top of lockers in a small building located just above the Campsite.

Chapter 15

R - Destroy the Blue Medallions 6: At the exit of the "Cliffside Ruins" area.

C - This can be found after the Ruins, in an area where there are body bags hanging from the ceiling. At the north of this area, there is a small room where the Castellan is positioned on wooden beams above a treasure chest.

C - During the escape sequence after defeating the boss, you can locate it on the right-hand side of the rectangular room where enemies are present.

Doki Doki Literature Club! attempted to overcome this challenge by concealing its psychological horror genre. Initially, the game was marketed as a visual novel with images that resembled a dating simulator, which is how the game appears to start. The genre is a product of his time, with the main theme being “the insignificance of a single human being amongst the vast universal scale. The reason that the genre is getting popular is that it mirrored real life nowadays: The rising inequality and the growing of massive corporate entities that can shape our thought along with all aspects of our life while operating outside of our control or understanding. This sounds pretty much the same as the premise of a cosmic horror story: a character helpless before the might of unfathomable entities.

The gameplay is turn-based 2D combat, similar to Darkest Dungeon or Heroes of Might and Magic.

Sea Salt

Sea Salt is actually the opposite of previously mentioned games – in this game, you would role-play as one of the Old God whose job is to summon various strange horror to corrupt and destroy the lands of humans.

The story begins with the humans of a fishing colony decide to rebel against you, their patron god, by cheating on their yearly sacrifice.
