1. Football Manager 2023

Football Manager is a game series that just keeps on getting better and better each year. It's so easy to put so many hours into this game and it's so rewarding with every promotion or wins you can get. Even though you do have to update most the of names of the leagues yourself and you need to download the faces and badges of most players/clubs, it makes the game slightly better and feels a bit more realistic.

Some nice additions (data hub) and some small but important improvements (staff meetings, etc.) make this another essential upgrade for all fans of the series. If you missed FM20 or FM21 then this is a good time to jump back in, there are refinements on systems introduced in the last few games that mean you have a better overall experience (data analysis of your and other teams has come on MASSIVELY over the last few years, for example).

This year is the best football manager has been with the new animations that make the match engine smoother. Players' values are now within a range so it makes trying to buy a player more realistic and players who play through injuries now wear protective equipment. It's the small things SI is doing that are making these games better year after year.

2. CarX Drift Racing Online

CarX Drift Racing Online is as its name implies, a racing game that focuses on drifting. Though it does have online in the title, it does have a single-player component to it as well.

The selection within the game is satisfying with the single-player mode having several different game modes from drifts, time attacks and tandem race with others; and numerous cars to gain and modify as you play and progress. With the steam workshop, there are also hundreds of cars and mods to add to the game too.

The gameplay itself is both enjoyable and satisfying with the many tracks to play as you earn points within by drifting, and the driving of course with it being a driving game. Having played both the modes in single-player and some multiplayer games, both parts are fun to play. Driving and controlling the cars lean more towards simulation rather than arcade since the feel of it is more realistic. So those that are more interested in simulation-type games may enjoy it more, but it is enjoyable, nonetheless. Playerbase is quite active, which is important with the online portion being a focus of the game, so you can easily find people to play with.

The visuals and graphics of the game are amazing with both the cars themselves and the various tracks. This is especially so in the higher-end quality graphics setting making the graphics more detailed and crisper. The UI when racing is also well done with how it is laid out without being too cluttered.

3. FIFA 22

I honestly think this is the best FIFA for about 3/4 years. The gameplay is slightly slower than last year and player movements aren't as erratic giving the game a little bit more of a realistic feel. Goalkeepers are actually making saves that they should be and making a string of saves in a row. People complaining about goalkeepers are OP but I find it makes the game more interesting and if you're playing Premier League football, you expect a keeper to save a fair amount of shots and not concede 4/5 goals every game which is a problem I detested in FIFA 21.

I've also noticed that passing has a more realistic note to it. Rather than have every pass going to target there's more of a highlight towards the players' attributes as well, for example in FIFA 21, you could pretty much long ball with any player with any long ball stat and hit your target 8 times out of 10 whereas now the long ball attribute will play a big part in just how often and how accurate the pass will be.

Defending has definitely improved, tackles are more realistically executed and also players throwing themselves in front of shots is also a lot more common which is something that was lacking in FIFA 21. Impulsive interceptions are more common rather than letting the ball roll past a yard ahead of the player they actually actively try and sometimes succeed in intercepting. The create a club mode is a nice touch, reminds me of PES, and it's something that I've always wanted to be put into a FIFA game and I've finally got my wish.

4. Rocket League

Rocket League is less of a "sports game" and more of an actual sport. In FIFA or Madden you have a "pass" button, but to make a pass in Rocket League you have to drive your car into the ball at the right speed and angle to send it over to where your teammate is going. You have to create the pass yourself, and it can be anything, from a hard bounce off the back wall to a soft lob over the defender.

Passing, shooting, dribbling, tackles, jukes, they're all in the game, but you have to make them happen yourself, not just press the right button. At first, just driving the car to the ball is a challenge, but as your skill grows, the freedom to create any play you can imagine and execute is unlike anything you'll find in a "sports game". Together with the mechanical skill to do what you want with the ball, you'll have to develop positional awareness and learn proper rotation and game sense.

There are very few games that are consistently rewarding for hundreds or thousands of hours, that can keep challenging you as you improve, and improve, and improve beyond what you ever imagined you'd be capable of. In fact, this is the ONLY one I know.

5. Forza Horizon 5

Maybe you like cars, driving cars, but not necessarily full-on racing with a career mode and climbing up ranks. What if you took a Ubisoft game, but the cars would be the "player characters"?

The Horizon games basically let you do your own thing and let you go at your own pace. It's a game you can play when you don't really feel like playing or feel like challenging yourself. Whether you plan to 100% all the content or just freeroam in your favorite cars doing small challenges. The online modes let you compete or work together with other players or you could just drive in a convoy with friends.

If you never played a Forza Horizon title, this is pretty much the best place to start with this title being the newest one. The most noticeable improvement compared to FH4 would probably be engine sounds and a much larger map. Some people like the greens of FH4's map, but I have my bias for dry deserts full of cactus and wet jungles. If dirt or cross country racing is your thing, you will feel right at home.

I used to laugh at the Horizon series after seeing someone play a dirt race with a Lambo until I realized that was kind of the point of the Horizon series. Yeah, it used to have a story mode, but the games have basically become sandbox driving games. If you asked me why 5 out of all the other games, my simple answer would be "Toyota".

Video games get more realistic with each new release. Better graphics, improved physics, and more intelligent non-playable characters mean most games look and feel much more life-like than their predecessors from 10 or 20 years ago. Taking this into consideration, it's no surprise that players and especially those who are also sports fans love to get as close to it as possible. Virtual reality is clearly the next logical step in bridging the gap between video games and reality. There is a lot of potential for sports games to be improved by virtual reality, though we’re yet to see this truly harnessed by developers. With the release of the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, virtual reality versions of our favourite titles may finally be on the horizon. 

Of all the sports that would look good through a VR headset, here are some of the best. 

Football

Football is the most-watched sport around the world and the national sport of many European and South American countries. Most teams have long histories, leading to fandoms that are passed down from generation to generation. In many parts of the world, your football team is a big part of your identity. 

This passion is also why FIFA Football is such a popular video game, with fans queuing up to get their hands on the new release each year, even if little has changed from the previous version. 

Over the years, the graphics have come on leaps and bounds, becoming more realistic with each new release. New functionality has also helped to spice up the gameplay, including custom team and career modes. But despite this, the game hasn't evolved much for most of the 21st century. 

Virtual reality would change this though. It would mean football fans could get closer to realising their dreams of playing for their beloved club than has ever been possible before. Instead of seeing the game from up in the stands and controlling the players remotely, they could step into the boots of one of the 11 men and play (almost) for real. 

American Football

VR Sports Challenge hints at the potential a virtual reality American football game could have. Looking through the bars of your helmet, you get to feel the tension that comes from standing holding a football, trying to find a receiver, while being charged at by several huge men.

EA’s Madden franchise is the gold standard when it comes to American football games and the company has been reliably churning out annual releases of this officially licensed title since the early 1990s.  

However, some fans feel recent releases have been let down by the aggressive use of microtransactions and a lack of innovation. 

Like football in Europe, American football is a huge part of the culture of many US cities. The NFL is by far the most-watched sports league in the country, and much of the nation grinds to a halt for one Sunday each February as they come together to watch the Super Bowl. 

This makes American football a prime candidate for the VR treatment. There’s a huge market for it thanks to a deep-rooted love for the sport and a virtual reality game would also help satisfy many of the fans that feel the Madden franchise has stagnated. 

Formula 1

Formula 1 is often referred to as the “pinnacle of motorsport”. Whether you agree with that statement or not, the fact that it is the most-watch motor racing series in the world is irrefutable. 

F1 games have come on quite a bit in recent years after a period of stagnation in the late 2000s, particularly with the introduction of Formula 2 cars in the 2020 release. Codemasters’ F1 franchise has also become one of the most realistic sports simulators too, with support for force-feedback steering wheels and other hardware. 

However, a lot of hardcore fans have been asking VR to be included in the F1 games for some time. F1 2020 didn’t support virtual reality natively, but the third party system vorpX does make it possible. The work involved in doing this does put it out of reach of the average consumer, but it does show how promising a VR version of an F1 game can be. 

With head-tracking enabled, you’re able to turn your head to focus on the apex of a corner as you turn it, just as you would if you were really out on a racetrack. 

Given that Codemasters has already created a virtual reality version of one of its other racing games, DiRT Rally 2.0. Players have praised the implementation of virtual reality in the game. With the 3D effects creating depth, head tracking, and high-quality graphics, the game is about as close as you can get to driving a real race car without actually being in one. 

Overall, just about every sports game will look great with an upgrade to virtual reality. By far, the easiest game to add VR support to will be the F1 series as it’s already been done by enthusiasts. However, developers would be able to make any other sports game come alive by placing the player in the shoes of a real athlete and giving them a first-person perspective of competing in front of huge crowds.

Coming from developer Phony Games, Furballs is an upcoming football game for Android and iOS. The studio has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the project and is looking to achieve $20,000. Furballs promises to bring console-like gameplay to the mobile platform.

Upon taking a quick glance at Furballs, you’ll probably think to yourself: “Oh, it's just Rocket League but with hamsters driving balls”. Then you watch the game’s trailer – which has been included right below – and it’s exactly that. We are not complaining, though. Rocket League is a great game, so we’re intrigued to see that someone is trying to bring similar gameplay to mobile. Meanwhile, the setting is a hamster cage, which just too cute to pass.

The controls look simple enough: You just have to drag on the screen to move your hamster ball. Aside from that, you can jump by tapping on the screen with 2 fingers or activate a speed buff by swiping. Controller support is present as well, but if you opt to use that feature, you’ll be matched with others who are also playing with controllers for balance’s sake.

Furballs will offer several game modes ranging across both singleplayer and multiplayer, so those find the idea of playing football as hamsters but are not too competitive will still find plenty of content to enjoy. That said, the multiplayer elements will certainly be more appealing to the majority of players. These include 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 matches, so regardless of whether you want to play by yourself or with a couple of friends, there’s an option.

The quirky premise of the game means you’ll get to see how famous soccer, NBA, or NFL players fare on the rink. How good is baseball player Justin Turner on skates? Does LeBron James' natural athleticism extend to hockey?

Well, probably not in the real world. But in a video game, nothing is possible, especially considering that Ultimate Rivals doesn’t even try to be realistic whatsoever. Players will have Turbo speed allowing them to move faster than humanly possible, as well as ultimate abilities to use at the opportune moment.

Everything plays out on a variety of neon-colored rinks, with green gem pieces exploding dropping from the goalie whenever they make a save that you can pick up to accumulate your ultimate meter. Checking players will also reduce their health, and once it drops to zero, that player will temporarily be removed from the game. The goal (pun intended) of Ultimate Rivals: The Rink seems to be to deliver on the fast-paced action essence of ice hockey without you having to worry about the rules.

The game features a total of 58 pro athletes at the moment, with more promised to be on the way. You'll form a team by selecting a goalie and 2 outfield players, all of whom have varying stats. Then you can either play through the single-player mode or go online to put your hockey skills to the test against other players.

The world of soccer video games sees two of its biggest contestants - Pro Evolution Soccer (PES for short) and FIFA fighting for official licenses every year, and this year is no different. eFootball PES 2020 officially came out this September and has achieved the award of 'E3 Best Sports Game', so you can expect that it will not stand behind FIFA 20 by one bit. In fact, Konami has successfully jacked off the license of team Juventus from EA, and so if you are a fan of the Seria A champion, you can only find them "officially" in eFootball PES 2020.

And following their recent tradition, Konami is releasing the eFootball PES 2020 LITE - the free version of eFootball PES 2020. But don't think it will be lackluster since its free, as this LITE version only rips off some contents from the original game, but keeps almost all of the most important features, including the licensed ones.

Basically, eFootball PES 2020 LITE still keeps the high-quality realistic gameplay of the full game, including latest updates from the full game, such as the legendary Barcelona's midfielder Iniesta's titular skills - Finesse Dribble. Hence, you can enjoy the completely similar in-match experience you get from the non-lite version, apart from ranges of omitted teams.

However, all of the licensed teams such as Juventus, Manchester United, FC Barcelona, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and many more from the Brazilian and Argentinian league will still appear in this game. It's not enough to cover every soccer fan, but it's enough for realistic soccer experiences in video games. And if you want more teams, you can find all of them in the Training mode.

All of those teams will be available in Offline modes, including Local Match and Co-op Match, and you can make some amendments to them in Edit Mode as well. Most of the online modes will also available in this eFootball PES 2020 LITE, including the most important ones - myClub and Matchday. There are only three stadiums in this version, which is quite lackluster, but not too important either.

Overall, eFootball PES 2020 LITE is a huge budget entrance to everyone interested in soccer and Konami's franchise. It will be a great choice to try the game before buying the whole game, or either to have a quick match with your friends to kill some times!

As Android Police reported yesterday, NBA 2K Playgrounds has made its way over to the Android platform. The game enjoyed moderate success on both PC and consoles, where it's 2v2 NBA Jam type set up managed to become quite popular despite the fact that many questioned its inclusion of microtransactions.

The mobile version, on the other hand, will be a free-to-play game, so even though microtransactions are still a thing here, you won't have to pay to get started like with the PC or console versions. If you do decide to pick it up, however, note that the current version is only a beta, so you might encounter some issues.

In case you are not familiar with NBA 2K Playgrounds, it's kind of an arcade-style basketball game featuring 2v2 matches on smaller courts. You'll get many legendary figures from all over the history of the NBA, all of whom are presented in a cartoonish fashion.

The players also have their own unique abilities to bring to the court too. Still, you only get to pick 2 at the same time, so be sure to choose those that have good synergy with one another. For example, if you already have a great offensive player, the second one should be a defense expert to form an all-round duo.

There’s also the option to upgrade your players and unlock new ones by opening packs – so lootboxes basically. These packs cost premium currencies, which you can either buy with real cash or grind through doing daily challenges and events. Needless to say, the latter method will take you much longer.

Konami just announced that they will fully upgrade its existing successful title PES 2018 to the new PES 2019 in an upcoming major update this December. Konami confirmed in their announcement that PES 2019 will be available on Google Play Store with most updated player rosters along with updates of just about every aspect of the game.

Besides acquiring licenses of 10 new leagues, the new engine for PES 2019 will deliver a revolution in the gameplay formula of the current PES 2018. In addition, AI intelligence enhancements, unique playing styles, and more realistic ball physics, which are powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, will also be parts of the big upcoming update.

To be more specific about the update, Konami successfully acquired 10 new leagues’ licenses, consisting of Superliga Quilmes Clásica, Campeonato Brasileiro and J.League. Players can start experiencing those leagues in the new PES 2019 as well as console and PC versions.

The only exception is that J.League is exclusively available for the mobile version. The update will also bring the redesign of myClub to iOS and Android versions which includes “Live Update” feature. This feature offers weekly updates of players and it is already included in the Ultimate Team - a mode of FIFA. However, despite these changes, Konami’s business model remains unchanged as they still offer PES 2019 as a free-to-play game with microtransaction being available.

Even though Konami has basically reworked PES 2019 compared to the 2018 version - PES 2018, they are still going to launch it as a major update instead of a stand-alone game. This may suggest that Konami is strengthening their commitment to the “game as a service” model.

Staying with the same game title may help Konami to launch their new update smoothly as they will not have to build their user base again. Even though PES 2019 only comes as a new update, it will be a new game with many new features with the mission to take the football formula of Konami to a higher level.
