Just a few days ago, Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment released a new character named Octane to the battle royale, and some keen-eyed fans have noticed that the backstory of this new character drew inspiration from the Titanfall 2’s speedrunning community.

An individual known by the nickname Cash Mayo holds the current world record for speedrunning Titanfall 2’s Gauntlet in just 12 seconds. To achieve such an impressive feat, this person calculated and used frag grenades at the correct moment to give themselves speed boosts when needed. Of course, aside from that trick, a lot of precise movements were required to finish the run in such a short time. Check out the video below to witness the making of this record with your own eyes.

It seems Respawn Entertainment was impressed by this too, as the studio decided to use it as an inspiration to write Octane’s backstory.

In the official description of Octane, we know that he is the heir to the Silva Pharmaceuticals and as a result had a luxurious upbringing, never lacking for anything in his life. Thus, he found entertainment in performing dangerous stunts, then record and share them for others to watch. One day, he decided to set a new record for a Gauntlet by using a grenade to launch himself over the finish line.

That foolish attempt cost Octane his legs, but he then had them replaced with mechanical prosthetics that let him run even faster. The first trailer of Octane has a reference to the Gauntlet speedrun and also a link to Cash Mayo’s run. The link is under a pop-up that reads “What is the gauntlet” that appears at the 12-second mark of Octane’s trailer. Watch it for yourself:

Cash Mayo seems pretty glad to know about this, calling Respawn “clever” on reddit. And this person has a point. This is indeed a nice move from Respawn to show appreciation to fans of its games.

Apex Legends’ developer Respawn Entertainment confirmed yesterday that the hit battle royale is receiving a new Legend, Octane. This will be the first new character to come to Apex Legends after its launch. He will be released next to the game’s season 1 “Wild Frontier” battle pass very soon.

Details about Octane’s abilities are not yet available on Apex’s official website, but PlayStation Blog has given us a glimpse into what the character is capable of. Most of Octane’s kit is built around his health pool. With his tactical ability, he can move faster, but it only lasts for a few seconds and costs a percentage of his health upon activation. To make up for this, his passive ability heals him whenever he is not taking fire, thus allows him to slowly regenerate the health he spent on abilities or lost in combat.

Octane’s ultimate is Launch Pad. As its name suggests, this ability throws out launch pads on the ground, which anyone can jump on to get a boost into the air. Respawn has even placed some launch pads outside the Market for you to try them out before the new Legend arrives.

Initially it was not clarified how Octane can be unlocked, but earlier today Respawn Entertainment community manager Jay Frechette revealed on his Twitter that players can gain access to him by spending Legend Tokens or 750 Apex Coins (Roughly $7.5 or Rs 510). Basically, Octane is similar to Mirage and Caustic in this regard. Also, Frechette has said that a battle pass purchase is not necessary to get Octane.

Octane will arrive alongside a new season for Apex Legends, which also adds several new loot and special events. The game is currently available on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 for free.

We have recently see the card images of five leaked new characters in Apex Legends,  these images were leaked out last week and have been gathering the attention of a lot of people ever since.

On the 4th of March,  DTZxPorter has revealed on Twitter some images of what was claimed to be the work-in-progress heroes in Apex Legends. From what we have seen so far, they seem to be the card images in the screen of character selection. Apparently, he has found these images in a hidden Apex file and then published them on the internet.

This leaked image also shows some existing Legends, on the left we have Bangalore, the third slot is of Caustic, Bloodhound on the sixth, Mirage on the most right corner. Other images about the new Legends will be revealed later or will be added to the game.

Observe the image carefully, on the second slot we have a new character with a white skull mask, looks quite like Reaper from Overwatch. In the center of the image, we have two new Legends both with glowing and white eyes, so I suppose that they would be just like Wraith with his immaterial powers. Standing between Mirage and Bloodhound are two other Legends, however, from this image alone, we couldn't tell anything about them or their special abilities yet. The only thing we know that one is a white strong man and one other has an eye patch and red beard.

From another DTZxPorter's image, we also got to see the upcoming Octane, a new Apex' Legend. Despite the rumor that Octane is fake, from this image we could tell that Octane is real and is very close to being released.

All of these five Legends are still in working progress, following DTZx. The images of the card might look amazing authentic, but we still the developer of Apex hasn't confirmed this information yet, so all of this could still be faked or just never got released.
