All of this has led to the game being banned for a short while in a few cities in the Gujarat states, but this ban has now been lifted.

On the other hand, gamers are understandably not happy about being barred from their favorite form of entertainment. Many cited studies showing that there is no connection between video games and violent behaviors as arguments to support PUBG Mobile, and the Internet Freedom Foundation recently filed a PIL against the ban as they believed it violated several articles of the constitution.

India is not the only country where PUBG Mobile is being faced with problems, however. Parents in the UAE are also calling for the game to be banned for similar reasons as in India, and the government of Nepal has already taken steps to forbid its citizens from playing this battle royale. On April 13, the Cultural Parliamentary Committee of Iraq submitted a report requesting a ban on several online multiplayer video games, PlayerUnknown's Battleground and Fortnite Battle Royale included. “The committee is concerned about the obsession over these electronic games that ignite violence among children and youth," said Sameaa Gullab, head of the committee in a press conference. "Its influence has spread rapidly among Iraq’s society.”

This association then went on to demand that the authority issue a ban on PUBG Mobile, saying that it is more addicting than drugs and is causing youngsters to spend all their time on their phones and doing nothing.

It’s quite clear that PUBG Mobile is just being turned into a scapegoat here to make it easier for others to shrug off their own responsibilities. Demanding a ban to be imposed on a game because some students are doing poorly on their exams is like covering a rampaging animal with a blanket and hope that it’ll disappear.

Unlike the all-in-one handheld games of the old days, PUBG Mobile cannot be locked in a drawer until the exams are over. Furthermore, not only school kids, but many adults also enjoy the game as well. Thus, a ban on the game is simply ridiculous.

Are mobile games addictive to a certain extent? Well, admittedly yes, they are popular for a reason. However, educating minors and making sure that they enjoy their hobbies in a healthy way should be the responsibility of parents – it has always supposed to be.

Shortly after PUBG Mobile made that statement, some Indian players reported that they were getting pop-up messages during their gaming sessions saying that they had played for 6 hours on that day and asking them to come back after 25 hours. This message quickly went viral on social media, and many believed that the company was testing a playtime restriction system. However, the developer later said it was a bug and quickly removed it from the game.

This week sees a new development to this story. Users who have logged into PUBG Mobile recently are seeing another pop-up notification that talks about how they can maintain their health while gaming.

“At the end of the day, as much as we all love PUBG MOBILE, it is just a game. When you are engrossed in conquering Pochinki and looting the city, time can fly by. It is important to take note of how long you have been playing the game.  Regular breaks can minimise stress of looking at the screen for longer durations as well as relax your mind in general,” the message reads.

Additionally, the pop-up also asks players if they’re under 18 years old. This could possibly be the developer collecting data to further work on a reasonable system that ensures players' health. For now, though, players who keep on playing for too long only get a reminder that says: “The game is appreciated in India and world over. The heated topic of banning PUBG Mobile in India is seeing a new development, as the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) has recently filed a PIL to the Gujarat High Court to challenge the ban of the game that was previously implemented in the state.

As we reported many times before, PUBG Mobile is one of the most popular games in India at the moment, and many youngsters are spending too much time on it to the point where they neglect their studies and even steal money from their parents to buy in-game cosmetic items.

This has resulted in the game receiving heavy criticism from parents, as they claim it is leading to addiction, violent tendencies, and generally negative behaviors among their children.

Against all this backlash, some cities in Gujarat imposed a ban on PUBG Mobile, according to which anyone spotted playing the game could face legal repercussion. This ban reportedly saw about 20 people arrested, although they were all later released on bail.

While the ban has since been removed in several cities, IFF shared a post on Reddit yesterday stating that it had filed a PIL against the ban as the organization believed that it violated Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the constitution.

“What is worse are the legal prosecutions that have resulted from it,” the Reddit post reads, “While the PUBG ban may seem absurd and amusing at first glance, it is no laughing matter. Out of the twenty-one people arrested, at least thirteen were young college students. For a young student who is worried about his family’s reaction and future career prospects, being arrested by the police can be a deeply traumatic experience.”

IFF thinks that the reason behind the ban of PUBG Mobile is just simply moral panic, and it is not an effective solution. “The harms from video games require scientific study and then non-legal methods of engagement,” it said.

A recent case of a 10th-grade student from Telangana committing suicide after he was scolded by his parents for spending too much time on PUBG Mobile has added more fuels to the heated topic that is the banning of the game in India. Now, parents in the UAE are also calling for this popular battle royale to be banned as they think it is a "bad influence on youth".

A parent in Dubai, Gulnaz Arif Moula, told Khaleej Times: “PUBG should certainly be banned because it negatively affects the minds of children, which makes them very aggressive… Kids took this game so seriously another important thing – not even studying – they only have the goal to win in this game."

"I strongly believe that PUBG should be banned,” Another parent, Mueena Farooq Rumane, said, "With the recent New Zealand mosque attack, it didn't surprise me when I read the response of the attacker and how games like Spyro Dragon and Fortnite trained him to be a killer."

Meanwhile, Bibi Usaima complains that her children spend too much time on PUBG to the point where, as she said, “they cannot concentrate on schoolwork anymore. They are fully engaged in these addictive games and are always on their laptops or iPads – no more outdoor activities."

"It's not suitable for children under the age of 10. My seven-year-old boy plays with 18-year-old boys. It gets on my nerves, my children have become aggressive, and every time I quit, they begin to quarrel. I want it to be banned everywhere and forever.”

On the other hand, fans of the game have also spoken up to rebut these opinions from concerned parents. Dennis Nolan Menezes, admin of the PUBG UAE Community Facebook page, claims that "There are multiple studies which show that kids have a good enough understanding of the difference between games and reality.”

According to him, cases of kids experiencing mental instability related to violence games are just a minuscule number, and if people are relying on these cases as examples to rally against PUBG Mobile, then other violent products such as movies should also be banned.

Menezes also believes that these games also have certain benefits as well, as they "help kids vent out little frustrations they may be having arising from daily life, thus calming them down. It helps them relax.”

“Banning does nothing at all in reducing exposure. Kids and everyone else always find ways to circumvent bans - it's useless,” he added, "instead, it would be better to help them understand their feelings and show them ways to voice it out or get to terms with themselves.”

The ban on PUBG Mobile has been lifted in the city of Ahmedabad and several others after it received a huge backlash from fans of the game on social media. Implemented on the 14^th of March, this ban reportedly saw 20 people from Vadodara, Ahmedabad, and Rajkot getting arrested under section 188 of IPC for playing the game. Last weekend, two young men got hit by the Hyderabad-Ajmer train in Hingoli, India. Their bodies were found after one day near the railway by residents.
