Minecraft is an open-world sandbox construction video game developed by Mojang Studios. In this game, players interact with a fully modifiable 3d world made of blocks. The game has grown massively since its launch, with over 160 million players monthly. Due to this immense popularity, Mojang has released quite a few versions and spinoff games for Minecraft.
In this article, we are going to showcase a list of all Minecraft versions and spinoffs to see which one is the best.
1. Minecraft
Originally released in 2011, Minecraft has three different versions: Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, and Education Edition. You can get Minecraft Java and Bedrock for free on PC and Android.
Java Edition is the original version of the game, with the most features and modability. Its code is more easily modified than the other editions, and so it has by far the most robust scenes for mods and custom servers.
Bedrock Edition is the special version for platforms that can't run Java. Bedrock Edition has more saturated graphics, different terrain generation, some exclusive items, and an official add-on system to deal with the lower modability. However, it has fewer features compared to Java.
Education Edition is an educational version of Minecraft for classroom use. It allows teachers and students to collaborate to build projects and solve problems.
Overall, if you are on a PC, it is best to play the Java version for the full Minecraft experience. Bedrock is cool, but only play it if you can't play Java. Lastly, the Education version is more or less of a joke for gamers. It is the worst amongst Minecraft versions and spinoffs.
2. Minecraft Dungeons
Minecraft Dungeons is an ARPG version of Minecraft. It allows up to 4 players to travel across procedurally generated levels, fight monsters, and face off against powerful bosses. The game also has an Arcade version that requires exactly 4 players to play.
Minecraft Dungeons is one of the few games with a storyline that gives us a closer look into the lore of the Minecraft world. It has quite a few notable features that should be implemented to normal Minecraft, such as monsters and unique weapons.
3. Minecraft Earth
The developer of Minecraft literally looked at Pokemon Go's success and went "can we have some of that". Minecraft Earth is similar to Pokemon Go: It is a free-to-play augmented reality spin-off mobile game. Players' task is to travel to real-life locations, build structures and collect resources.
It features quite a few unique gameplay aspects and interactions similar to the main version of Minecraft. However, they released the game in the most inopportune time: the Covid pandemic. Because of that, not many people want to run around and interact with real-life places anymore. This is why Minecraft Earth closed down on June 30, 2021.
4. Minecraft: Story Mode
Minecraft: Story Mode was a point-and-click adventure video game based on Minecraft. In Story Mode, players had to complete chapters in order to progress, and their choices and actions had effects on the story. There have been two seasons released, with a total of 13 episodes.
In November 2018, Telltale Games, the creator, began the process of closing down the studio due to financial issues. Most of its games started to become delisted from digital storefronts, including Minecraft: Story Mode. Telltale's bankruptcy and licenses running out is the reason why this game is discontinued.
